Musing on Manifestation
Manifestation is a curious word. Coming from the Latin manus “hand” + festus of fendere “strike” same as, of course, manifesto. As if with a strike of our hand and a well turned phrase we could declare what we’d like and it would fall at our feet – solid and true.
It doesn’t quite work like that…except in those rare times when it does. And we humans, at least those in the thrall of aliveness, do seem destined to spend most all our time doing backbends at that uncomfortable edge between manifest and unmanifest.
The manifest as yesterday’s news, and the unmanifest – particularly those deepest longing desires of our heart – always just out of reach in our tomorrow.
Manifest reality. Unmanifest longings. Would that we could easily charge over the threshold! And yet all the juice of life is in this inbetween. Becoming is where magic is. Where communion with the mystery is. Life is alive in the place where dreams refining and becoming real, whisper.
Have you had the experience – recently, again, always- where you have been wanting and wanting and wanting something and it seems to show up all around…like it’s teasing you? Maybe as mundane as “that” car you are considering suddenly seeming to be every freaking other car on the road. Or maybe you are longing to fall in love and you find everyone is holding hands and your biggest daily obstacle seems to be avoiding other people’s public displays of affection. Maybe it’s a phrase in the radio or repeated in tv, print, billboards. You must have had that experience, yes? The threshold of manifestation – as if your future is bumping against the shore of your life trying to find a place to land.
Most days, the threshold of the manifest is my favorite favorite favorite place to be. How fun is it to let life woo me with my future? What will I find when I am willing to be curious and look for the clues…the “winks”? And what if I take it another step and ask the mystery to show me possibilities I hadn’t thought of? When I remember to keep my eyes OPEN and curious it seems that life is always trying to show me new exciting edges.
And if there is one creative practice that helps, that I could wish for everyone, it is a regular art journal practice. Because art – and particularly messy searching private art – can hold it all – it can hold the manifest in all its gratitudes and griefs. And it can hold our unmanifest longings gently. Showing us over time the ones that did change while acknowledging the ones that become the unbroken threads of our life. And art is also the perfect envelope for the muse to slip us the inbetween surprises: collages with strange synchronicities, poetic form, faces, messages…bumps from your future.
Below is a short 3 minute video prompt from one of my art journal courses that I invite you to try. I wonder, what manifest and unmanifest will come knocking when you play with your poetic edge?
